The 2025 GMC Sierra EV is shaping up to be a notable step forward for the electric pickup, reportedly adding a 170 kWh battery pack as a new base offering. This complements the 200+ kWh pack that first appeared in the GMC Hummer EV.

GMC hasn't officially confirmed battery specifications for the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1, which has left reservation holders guessing. Recent reports, though, point to some changes coming for the 2025 model year.

According to sources familiar with the Hummer EV platform, the current 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali uses the same 204 kWh Ultium battery pack. That pack pushes the Sierra EV's estimated range to 440 miles, with towing capacity rated up to 10,000 pounds and payload up to 1,450 pounds.

For 2025, there's speculation that GMC will bring a smaller battery option to more Sierra EV trims. Reports point to a 170 kWh pack offering roughly 380-390 miles of range, which would still cover most drivers' daily needs while giving buyers a lighter, likely less expensive alternative to the 200+ kWh pack.

More Trims and Features for the 2025 GMC Sierra EV Lineup

The 2025 GMC Sierra EV is expected to broaden its lineup beyond the Denali trim, with the new battery option opening the door to more variants. A road-oriented AT4 model joins the mix, featuring GMC's four-wheel-steering CrabWalk function, a 2-inch lifted suspension, and 35-inch all-terrain tires. This trim is also expected to include Super Cruise and a MultiPro tailgate.

An entry-level Elevation trim is also planned for the 2025 lineup, coming with 18-inch wheels, the MultiPro tailgate, and a power-operated front trunk. Optional extras on this trim are expected to include Super Cruise, a spray-in bedliner, the Power Station Pro onboard generator (10.2 kW), and DC fast-charging capability up to 350 kW.

At the top of the lineup, the Denali trim will remain the fully loaded option, riding on 24-inch wheels with 35-inch tires while keeping access to the extended-range battery.

Fresh Color Options for the 2025 GMC Sierra EV Too

The 2024 Sierra EV ships in a single exterior color, a silver shade called Thunderstorm Gray. The 2025 model is expected to expand that palette considerably.

New color choices reportedly include Deep Ember Tintcoat, Deep Ocean Metallic, Moonlight Matte, Onyx Black, and a bright Summit White for buyers wanting a more distinctive look. Between the new colors, added trims, and battery choices, 2025 buyers will have far more room to customize their truck than 2024 reservation holders did.

When Will the 2025 GMC Sierra EV Be Available?

Production on the 2025 GMC Sierra EV is set to begin in September 2024, starting with Denali models. Deliveries to customers follow shortly after production ramps up. Buyers hoping to get an AT4 or Elevation trim will need to wait longer, since those versions aren't expected to reach dealerships until sometime in 2025.

It's worth setting aside a healthy budget, since the fully equipped Denali model with the larger battery pack is expected to carry a steep price tag, possibly crossing into six-figure territory at the high end.

That cost buys a genuinely capable electric truck. With an estimated range around 400 miles depending on trim, a wider spread of configurations to suit different buyers, and GMC's latest driver-assist and charging technology built in, the 2025 Sierra EV looks positioned to compete directly with the Ford F-150 Lightning and take on Tesla's Cybertruck as well.
